Appendicitis: Appendix is a normal organ seen in right lower abdomen. When it is thickened due to infection or obstruction it is called appendicitis. So when one has disease of appendix he/she has “appendicitis” and not “appendix”. Appendicitis is suspected(diagnosed)on the basis of findings observed and elicited by doctor along with few blood (laboratory)investigations. To confirm the clinical (by history given by the patient and doctor’s examination)diagnosis ultrasound is used. On some occasions ultrasound will not succeed in demonstrating the abnormal appendix and these are the situations which warrant a CT scan. To exclude a diagnosis of appendicitis CT is recommended.
