MRI is one of the safest technology applications in health care. Unlike its imaging competitor CT scanner, does not expose the patients or healthcare personnel to hazards of radiation exposure. However ignorant/ negligent minds,wrong priorities from the management can cause potentially lethal events.

Most dangerous and spoken of adverse effect is inadvertent entry of ferromagnetic objects into magnetic bore of MRI.Most common objects seen flying are oxygen cylinder(as the one in picture) and trolleys and chairs. They behave like missiles and and might prove lethal to patients and their attendants, MRI technicians,radiologists,nurses and other support personnel.

How can we prevent these untoward incidents?

1. Strict adherence to safety protocol by every one in the team lead by Radiologist.
2. Sensitising support staff at all levels on MRI safety.
3. Pre MRI counselling of patients and attendants.
4. Hiring right persons with appropriate ‘base’ behavioural traits.
5. Helping staff stay motivated to stick to safety protocols .
